Winterfest in Salzburg
Winterfest has been bringing contemporary circus to Salzburg since 2001. For several weeks around Advent and the holidays, the Volksgarten becomes a small circus world of illuminated tents, international artists and performances that are usually a little more experimental than the circus most of us grew up with.
The 2026/27 edition runs from November 25, 2026 to January 6, 2027. The first confirmed production is YOAH by Japan's CIRQUEWORK, while further artists are due to be announced from October.
What is Winterfest actually like?
The easiest way to describe Winterfest is probably "contemporary circus", but that does not tell you quite enough.
This is not just about juggling, acrobatics and impressive tricks. Winterfest brings together circus, theater, music, visual art and storytelling, often with productions that are atmospheric, funny, strange or surprisingly emotional. The official festival describes its program through acrobatics, poetry and bizarre humor, which is a pretty good indication that you should not expect a traditional ringmaster-and-elephants kind of circus.
That is also what makes it interesting for people living in Salzburg. You do not need to plan a big cultural outing or leave the city for a winter experience. You can simply meet someone after work, walk into the Volksgarten, spend an hour or so under the big top and be back home afterward.
For me, that is the appeal of events like this: they feel like a proper occasion without requiring an entire evening of planning.

The 2026 highlight: CIRQUEWORK's YOAH
The first production announced for Winterfest 2026 is YOAH, the latest work from Japanese contemporary circus company CIRQUEWORK.
The production combines Japanese traditions with digital art and follows a young dreamer on a journey through fear, loneliness and hope. Aerial acrobatics, juggling and diabolo are combined with digital projections, traditional Japanese drums, water sounds and electronic beats. The result sits somewhere between circus, theater and visual art.
YOAH runs in the large tent at the Volksgarten from November 25 to December 13, 2026. The performance lasts about 60 minutes and the festival currently recommends it for audiences from age 6.
The current schedule includes evening performances at 8:00 PM and weekend afternoon shows at 3:00 PM, which makes it relatively easy to fit around work, dinner or family plans.
The regular ticket price currently listed for YOAH is €82 for adults in Category A, €72 in Category B and €26 for children up to 15. The festival is also planning its broader 2026/27 ticket information for October, so I would check the official site before booking a different production.
A few practical things worth knowing
The main Winterfest setting is the Volksgarten, where the festival's large tent is located. Parking directly at the Volksgarten is limited, and the festival notes that no parking is available there on ice hockey game days. If you are coming by car, it is worth allowing extra time or using one of the alternative parking options listed by the organizers.
The festival also states that all its events are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair spaces can be reserved from October by phone or through the ticket stand at Europark.
One practical point I would especially keep in mind if you are going with children: check the age recommendation for the specific production rather than assuming every Winterfest show is designed for young kids. Contemporary circus can range from playful and family-friendly to much more abstract or intense.
