Which Christmas market should you actually visit?

Salzburg has a slightly ridiculous number of Advent markets, which is a nice problem to have. The trick is not trying to visit all of them.

The big Salzburg Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is the obvious starting point. It is the traditional one, and the setting is hard to beat. But if you live here, I would not automatically make it your destination every single time you want a Glühwein.

For a quieter evening, try Mirabellplatz or Sternadvent. For a family outing, Hellbrunn is a much better fit. For a different view of the city, head up to the Fortress or Stiegl-Keller. And if you want to turn the market into a proper winter day out, Wolfgangsee is the one I'd put on the calendar.

The nice thing about Salzburg's Advent season is that these places don't all feel the same.

The classic: Salzburg Christkindlmarkt

The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz is the one you should experience at least once each season. It has been running in its current form since 1974, with around 100 stalls and a daily program of concerts, children's readings, Krampus appearances and traditional tower music.

In 2026, the market opens on November 19 and runs until January 1, 2027. It is free to enter. Regular opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 10 am to 8:30 pm, Friday until 9 pm, Saturday from 9 am to 9 pm, and Sunday and holidays from 9 am to 8:30 pm. There are special hours around Christmas and New Year's Eve.

What I particularly like about this market is that it remains part of the city rather than feeling like a separate attraction. You can walk through it on your way somewhere else, stop for a drink, listen to a choir and keep going.

It is also the market with the strongest traditional program. In 2026, highlights include regular choir performances, children's readings with the Salzburg Christkind, tower brass music and traditional Krampus and Perchten appearances.

One practical tip: if you don't enjoy crowds, don't assume you have to go on a Saturday evening. A weekday visit can feel completely different.

Hellbrunn is the one I'd choose with kids

The Hellbrunner Adventzauber is probably the easiest market to recommend when children are involved. The palace becomes part of the decoration, with its 24 windows turned into a giant Advent calendar and more than 700 fir trees decorated with thousands of red ornaments and lights.

The children's area is a big part of the appeal. There is a Christmas train, a Christmas post office, animals and activities including a campfire where children can grill sausages with the scouts.

The 2026 market runs from November 19 to December 24. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 1 to 8 pm, weekends and holidays from 10 am to 8 pm, plus Monday, December 21. On December 24 it closes at 2 pm.

There is an entrance fee of €8 per person before 7 pm, which includes a voucher for a hot drink. After 7 pm, admission is free, and children under 6 are free. December 24 is also free. Tickets are bought at the entrance, with no advance reservation required.

The other reason I would keep Hellbrunn on the list is that it has more than just stalls. There is a dedicated Krampus area, live Christmas music and a family program throughout the season. In 2026, the Grossgmainer Krampusse parade is scheduled for December 4 at 6 pm.

Mirabellplatz is a good everyday Christmas market

If you live in Salzburg, Mirabellplatz is the market I would keep in mind for a spontaneous visit.

It is right in the city, close to the train station and well served by public transportation, so it works particularly well for an after-work Glühwein rather than a full Christmas outing. The market is smaller and easier to navigate than the main Christkindlmarkt, with food, drinks, crafts and gift ideas.

The 2026 season runs from November 19 to December 31. Regular hours are 10 am to 8 pm Sunday through Thursday and 10 am to 9 pm Friday and Saturday, with shorter hours on December 24 and December 31.

For me, the appeal here is simplicity. You don't need to make an evening of it. Meet a friend, grab something warm, walk around the stalls and continue into the Old Town.

Sternadvent is the quieter alternative

The Sternadvent is tucked between Getreidegasse and Griesgasse, and that location is part of its charm. The market sits in the decorated Sternarkaden and has a noticeably smaller, calmer feel than the big market squares. The focus is on crafts, gifts, traditional food and a more relaxed atmosphere.

The 2026 market runs from November 19, 2026 through January 6, 2027. It is open Sunday to Thursday from 11 am to 7 pm and Friday and Saturday until 8:30 pm. On January 1 through 6, it becomes a winter market with opening hours from 11 am to 6 pm.

That continuation after Christmas is one of the best reasons to remember it. The week between Christmas and New Year's can feel strangely empty in Salzburg, and Sternadvent gives you somewhere festive to go without pretending Christmas is still happening at full volume.

Go up to the Fortress for the view

The Fortress Advent is a very different experience from the markets in the city center. It takes place in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress, with traditional crafts, local food, Christmas music and views across the illuminated Old Town.

The 2026 dates currently listed are the Advent weekends from November 27 through December 20, plus December 7 and 8, with opening hours from 11 am to 7 pm.

One thing worth knowing is that you do not necessarily have to pay for the funicular just to visit the market. The official information says the footpath admission to the market courtyard is free when you tell the ticket office you are visiting the Advent market. The funicular and fortress interior have separate charges.

There is also a supervised children's program on opening days, along with tower trumpeters and other Christmas music.

If the weather is decent, this is one of the markets I'd choose when I want the evening to feel a little different from simply walking through the Old Town.

Stiegl-Keller is not really a traditional market , and that's the point

The Winterzauber at Stiegl-Keller is worth including because it gives you something the classic markets don't: a Christmas drink with a panoramic view over Salzburg.

After launching in 2025, the Winterzauber returns in 2026 and is extended through December 31. The terraces are decorated with lights and red ornaments, with mulled wine, punch, grilled bratwurst and the view over the Old Town.

The published 2026 hours are Wednesday to Friday from 3 to 9 pm and Saturday, Sunday and December 8 from 11 am to 9 pm.

I wouldn't send someone here looking for dozens of Christmas stalls. I'd send them here because they want to sit outside under a blanket, drink something warm and look down at Salzburg lit up for Christmas.

If you want a proper Christmas day trip , go to Wolfgangsee

One of my favorite things about living in this part of Austria is that the Christmas market options get much more interesting once you leave the city.

The Wolfgangsee Advent brings together markets in St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang. The lake itself is part of the experience, because the Advent boats connect the three villages. The markets are known for their elaborate decorations, traditional food and different atmospheres in each village.

In 2026, the Advent season runs from November 20 to December 20, with additional opening on December 7 and 8. The markets are generally open Wednesday through Sunday, with different hours depending on the village.

If you have not done this before, I think it is much more rewarding to treat it as a day trip rather than trying to rush through all three markets. The boat ride is part of the experience, and you can build in time for a winter walk or a meal.

This is also the option I'd keep in reserve for when you have friends visiting and want to show them something beyond the obvious Salzburg city center.

A few more markets worth keeping on your radar

There are plenty of smaller Advent markets around Salzburg, and this is where the original article tried to do too much. Rather than pretending every market deserves the same amount of space, I'd keep an eye on the official regional calendar as the season approaches.

The St. Leonhard Advent Market, at the foot of the Untersberg, is particularly interesting if you want something more traditional and community-focused. It has been running since 1973, features arts and crafts from Austria, Bavaria and South Tyrol, and proceeds go to local charities. The 2026 regional calendar currently lists November 28 as an opening date, but the complete 2026 schedule should be checked before publishing detailed opening hours.

There are also smaller markets around Salzburg in places such as Wals, Elixhausen and Anthering, many of which are more neighborhood event than major Christmas attraction. That's exactly why I would not rank them against the big city markets. They are worth discovering when you live nearby.

My way of doing Christmas markets in Salzburg

I would not try to "complete" Salzburg's Christmas markets. That starts sounding suspiciously like a second job. Instead, I'd pick a few based on the mood.

For the classic Salzburg experience, go to the Christkindlmarkt.
For a quiet drink after work, try Mirabellplatz or Sternadvent.
For kids, Hellbrunn has the most to keep them occupied.
For views, choose the Fortress or Stiegl-Keller.
For a proper winter outing, make a day of Wolfgangsee.

And if you live in Salzburg, don't underestimate the little neighborhood Advent markets. They are often less polished, less crowded and much more connected to the communities that actually live here. That's probably my favorite thing about Advent in Salzburg. You can enjoy the famous markets, but you don't have to experience Christmas here like a visitor. There are plenty of ways to make it your own.
