What is Halloween like in Salzburg?
Halloween in Salzburg is a bit more low-key than in some cities where the whole town seems to turn orange for a month. But that is not necessarily a bad thing.
Instead of one huge citywide celebration, Halloween tends to show up in different ways. There are family events in the afternoon, spooky activities around the Old Town, and parties taking over clubs and event spaces after dark.
For me, that makes it quite easy to choose your own version of Halloween. You can take the kids to see witches and pumpkins at the zoo, spend an hour hearing creepy stories in the Old Town, or get dressed up and stay out late.
And if you are new to Salzburg, Halloween is also a nice excuse to discover some local places you might not normally visit.

Halloween at Salzburg Zoo is the easy family choice
If you are looking for something Halloween-themed to do with children, Halloween at Salzburg Zoo is one of the most straightforward options.
The 2026 event takes place on Saturday, October 31, from 3 to 6 pm. The zoo is planning creepy activities, a witch's tour, a "Grab into the Unknown" challenge, a chamber of horrors and the traditional witch's fire near the cheetah enclosure, where visitors can roast apples. Costumes are welcome but not required. No registration is necessary.
The witch tours are scheduled for 3:15 pm at the main entrance and 5 pm at the cheetahs, which is useful to know if you want to plan your visit around them. The program is in German, and the zoo says the event will go ahead in bad weather with a reduced program.
One practical detail for international families: this is not an English-language Halloween program. If your children are comfortable with German, it should be easy to join in. Otherwise, the visual and hands-on parts of the event will probably be the most accessible.
The zoo is at Hellbrunner Straße 60 in Anif and can be reached by bus 25 from the city center and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof.
A smaller, free Halloween option for kids
The Spielzeug Museum has a Halloween party on Friday, October 30, from 3 to 5 pm. It is free and open to all ages.
The museum describes it as its traditional Halloween party, with Halloween decorations, sweets, theatrical makeup and spooky crafts to take home.
I actually like this kind of event for families who don't want to make Halloween into a huge production. It is short, central and easy to combine with an afternoon in the Old Town.
There is also a pumpkin-carving workshop on October 27, aimed at children aged five and up. It runs from 3 to 4:30 pm and costs €6 plus museum admission. Registration is required.
The Spielzeug Museum is at Bürgerspitalgasse 2, right in the Old Town.
Want something genuinely spooky? Try the Ghost Walk
If you are looking for something more atmospheric than a children's Halloween party, the Ghost Walk is probably the most interesting option.
There is a special Halloween-date walk on Saturday, October 31 at 6 pm, starting in the Old Town. The roughly 80-90 minute walk mixes spooky stories with real Salzburg history, including tales about the prince-archbishops, the devil, poachers and Paracelsus. It is aimed at adults.
Tickets are €13 and are available at the box office, with no reservation required for individuals and small groups.
This is the kind of Halloween activity I'd pick if you have friends visiting or simply want to do something seasonal without spending the whole evening in a club.
Where to party on Halloween night
If your idea of Halloween involves a costume, dancing and staying out late, Salzburg has a few very different options in 2026.
At Stiftung Mozarteum, R(av)equiem with DJ Dr. Schönhart & Friends starts at 11 pm on October 31. It is a Halloween club night in the Stadtfoyer, with costumes welcome, and tickets are listed at €10. The music is rooted in deep house, dub techno, electro and 80s wave.
Over at ARGEkultur, Enter the Lab - Halloween 2026 starts at 10 pm. This is the much heavier option, with drum and bass, techno, two stages, international acts and a high-end VOID sound system. The organizers say the full lineup and further details are still to come.
If you'd rather spend Halloween singing along to 90s hits than dancing to techno, there is also We Love the 90s - Halloweenparty at Stiegl Brauwelt. It starts at 9 pm, is for ages 21 and over, and combines a 90s party with Halloween. Tickets are currently advertised from €25.60 plus fees.
So, yes, Salzburg has a Halloween party for people who still know all the words to the Spice Girls, too.
A couple of practical things to know
Costumes
Costumes are worth bringing if you enjoy dressing up, but you do not need one for every event. The Zoo explicitly says costumes are welcome but not required, while the Mozarteum's R(av)equiem also welcomes costumes.
Dress for the Weather
And don't forget that Salzburg can be cold and wet at the end of October. If you are doing the Ghost Walk or spending time outside around Hellbrunn, wear something that works under a costume rather than assuming Halloween night will be mild.
