Easter in Salzburg.
Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and one of Austria’s most charming cities, transforms into an enchanting Easter wonderland each spring. From traditional Easter markets to breathtaking day trips into the countryside, Salzburg offers a perfect mix of cultural heritage, festive cheer, and scenic beauty. Whether you're looking to immerse yourself in Austrian Easter traditions or simply soak up the lively atmosphere, Easter in Salzburg is an unforgettable experience.
Easter Traditions in Salzburg.

Easter holds deep significance in Austria, blending religious customs with local traditions. In Salzburg, Holy Week is marked by solemn church services, vibrant processions, and festive gatherings. Many locals observe Palm Sunday by carrying intricately woven "Palmbuschen" (palm bouquets) to church, a tradition believed to bring blessings for the year ahead.
One of the most beloved Easter traditions is the Osterbrunnen, where village fountains are beautifully decorated with hand-painted eggs, fresh flowers, and greenery. These colorful displays symbolize the renewal of life and are a popular sight across Salzburg and the surrounding countryside.
Food also plays a central role in the Easter celebrations. Families prepare Reindling, a cinnamon and raisin-filled cake that is often enjoyed on Easter Sunday. Another Easter favorite is the traditional Easter lamb cake, a light sponge cake shaped like a lamb, dusted with powdered sugar.
Easter Markets in Salzburg.
No Easter celebration in Salzburg is complete without a visit to its festive Easter markets. These markets, set against the stunning backdrop of baroque architecture and the Alps, are filled with handcrafted Easter decorations, artisan gifts, and mouthwatering seasonal treats.
At the heart of the city, the Salzburg Easter Market in the historic Old Town is a must-visit. Stalls offer beautifully decorated eggs, traditional wooden crafts, and locally produced delicacies such as cheese, honey, and smoked meats. Visitors can also enjoy live folk music, watch artisans at work, and sample traditional Easter dishes.
For a more intimate market experience, the Hellbrunn Easter Market at Hellbrunn Palace provides a fairytale-like setting. This market is perfect for families, with special activities for children, including Easter egg painting workshops and petting zoos.
