Summer in Salzburg hits different when you end the day under the stars, watching a film with strangers who feel like friends. Whether you’ve been swimming at the lake, hiking up Gaisberg, or just soaking up golden hour, there’s no better follow-up than an outdoor screening. And because we live for this kind of thing, here’s how to do it right:
Rule number one? Come early. Like early-early. That’s your best shot at a good seat. But if you can’t make it on time, no worries—bring a blanket. Chances are high you’ll be on the floor. My personal motto: make an event out of it. Show up before the film starts, grab a drink, catch up with friends, let the vibe build.
Snacks? Always. Some screenings like Sternenkino have food trucks and drinks on hand, but you’re allowed (and encouraged) to bring your own movie snacks and a couple of beers—just in case.
Also, this is Salzburg. Nights can turn chilly out of nowhere. That extra jacket? Bring it. It won’t hurt.
And finally: it’s not just about the movie. It’s about being out in the open, with all kinds of people. Someone might block your view, the couple next to you might whisper through the whole scene. But honestly? It never disappoints. Go even if the movie’s in German and you don’t speak it—the atmosphere makes it all worth it.
Just one ask: respect the screening and the spot. Take everything you brought, don’t litter, and be mindful of those around you. That way, we all get to enjoy the magic.
