Rainy skies, wild deer & homemade jam

A hike from Vollererhof to Glasenbach with a little help from the Tennengau Shuttle

We started the day in Salzburg with sunny optimism and a weather app that promised we might just outrun the rain. Spoiler alert: we didn’t. But honestly? It was still one of those days that made us feel lucky to live here.

The plan was simple: hike from the Vollererhof in Puch to Glasenbach, with a pit stop at the Erentrudisalm. We booked the Tennengau Shuttle the night before (included in our day ticket!) and were pleasantly surprised when it was already waiting for us the next morning. It’s a small thing, but nothing sets the tone for a relaxed hike like not having to chase your ride.

The views from the shuttle were already worth the trip – winding through green hills and sleepy villages that feel like they’ve pressed pause on time. Once we arrived, we followed the Salzburg Erfahren route (linked below), which we’d downloaded as a PDF just in case – and thank goodness, because the signal gets patchy along the way.

The hike up to the Erentrudisalm is gentle, family-friendly, and full of nature magic. It’s ideal for anyone with little ones in a carrier – and we kept saying how much our toddler would’ve loved this route. We saw deer roaming freely, cows in pastures, even a few curious chickens. It took us about 1 hour 10 minutes, but we paused a few times to wait out the heavier rain.

When we reached the Erentrudisalm, the doors weren’t officially open yet – but the couple running the place invited us in anyway. They offered fresh coffee, homemade cake, and even a little breakfast with warm bread and jam. Honestly? That alone earned them a five-star rating in our book. Cozy, kind, and exactly the kind of mountain hospitality you hope to stumble into on a wet day.

The Alm itself is spacious, with a playground and lots of outdoor seating – perfect for a sunny day visit with the kids. We’re already planning to come back for lunch with our son.

The way down was easier and faster (just under an hour) and drops you right at the entrance to the Glasenbachklamm. One heads-up: some of the last stretch is along a regular road, so you’ll want to watch for cars if you’re walking with kids.

Final verdict: 8/10

Mostly because Salzburg weather did its thing. But rain or shine, this route is an absolute keeper.
